DorisDesktop 1.1 Released

February 8th, 2011 by Demian Turner

After quite a bit of work a new version of DorisDesktop is ready, you can download it here.  While in beta the app will be free.  My plan is to make the desktop version of Doris the most full-featured of all the ways of accessing Doris, it’s where all the new ideas and feature requests will be tested out.

In general I’ve become a bit fed up with web apps, mainly because you have to learn substantially different interfaces with each one.  Desktop apps, especially on the Mac, not only get around this shortcoming, they also allow you to link in directly to some rich resources you use every day:

  • your Calendar
  • the Address Book
  • your Email
  • photos and docs

Managing these items on the web is possible, but it’s always more painful.  A desktop app provides the best experience and can sync with the cloud and be just a single click away.

What is DorisDesktop?

It’s just a desktop app that provides an additional, hopefully easier way to get to all the tasks stored in your online Doris account.  It’s main advantages are:

  • it launches fast
  • it runs in the background and is only one click away
  • being on the desktop, you’ll be able to better integrate task management into your existing workflow

What’s new in this version of DorisDesktop

  • drag and drop to re-order tasks now works properly (same for groups coming soon)
  • you can easily add notes to your tasks
  • you can drag URLs from your browser into DorisDesktop and they becomes tasks
  • security is improved with passwords now saved to the Keychain
  • the login workflow is improved
  • the app is globally available from its icon in the menu bar
  • interface improvements for adding and deleting tasks
  • see the CHANGELOG for the full list of changes, and note the API has been updated

What’s not working yet

  • currently you can’t drag & drop to re-order groups
  • nor can you drag tasks into different groups, this is planned for the next release
  • one-click access to bring DorisDesktop to the foreground no matter what you’re doing – to get this working I need to do some more work to be able to record keyboard shortcuts

Bugs

One bug I’ve discovered is if you drag to re-order, and in the process drag your task outside the task list, eg, into the groups list, the app thinks it’s a URL, I’ll fix this for the next release.  Also, in some cases the task list and note description doesn’t update properly, this will be fixed.

Keyboard shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are supported for all the basic features:

  • <spacebar> to add a new task to the current group
  • <enter> to edit the current task
  • <backspace> to delete the current task
  • <cmd> , to launch Doris’ prefs, currently where your can login

Feedback

As always I’d love to hear your feedback, either here in the comments, at Uservoice, or just shoot me an email to support@dorisapp.com.  I’ve updated the Doris Uservoice account with the tasks that have been completed.  According to their overview my feedback isn’t looking too bad.

Doris Public Beta Announced

Doris Beta Announced

After some preparation, the public beta for Doris was finally announced yesterday!  We’ve had some great feedback so far, and are scrambling to keep up with feature requests already coming in.  Some interesting enhancements on the near horizon:

  • community translation, so Doris will be available in YOUR language
  • iPhone doris, so you can create and sync your TODOs on the go

We also will be putting together a top requested features page, and implement new stuff according to demand.

Keep the feedback coming in and let us know if you experience any probs with your account.  Thanks for checking us out!

Doris productivity app released to Seagull community

October 7th, 2008 by Demian Turner

I would like to invite you to check out an app Dmitri and I have been working on, we finally put it live last week.

http://beta.dorisapp.com

The app is called Doris and it’s a productivity aid.  It started out life as simple Todo list manager I wrote over the holidays in Christmas 2006.  The idea is simple, you have a million things to do and it’s easy to forget and prioritise your tasks, so Doris takes a load of your mind and sorts it out for you.  Kind of like the personal assistant we all wish we had.

And she beats you up if you forget stuff too, but the severity can be set in your preferences of course 😉

The app uses Ajax and familiar web2.0 techniques to make adding and editing tasks easy to manage with as few clicks as possible. In fact you can do almost everything with just the keyboard.  Everything can be drag + dropped and easily grouped.

The suggested usage proposes just 2 kinds of groupings which differentiates it from other task management and GTD tools[1]: what you want to get done today, and everything else.  So you can create groups for the various tasks in your life, like what needs fixing around the house, what you want to blog about, what tasks need to get done for your various projects and so on.  Then each morning when you start the day’s work you drag the tasks from their relevant groups or “buckets” into Today and hopefully this helps you prioritise your goals.

Various friends and guys in our company have been using Doris for almost 2 years now and we’ve noticed that folks find it addictive. So give it a try and let us know what you think.

http://beta.dorisapp.com

Dmitri recently rewrote the whole UI, interaction layer and most of the backend so now it’s nice to look at as well as fun to use. However with the new look and feel we still have to re-integrate “my account”, password changing and tz offsets, etc.  This will be coming soon. The app is fully localized though with english and russian versions, not surprisingly, being the first available 😉  If you want
to do a translation for your language let us know.

In the near future we’ll be adding some interesting new features based on user feedback and demand.  Some ideas we have are:

– Mail.app highlight and right-click “add new task” – we found most of our workload starts off in emails
– iPhone version
– integration with Trac, Basecamp and possibly Outlook
– your suggestion here
