OS X widget available!

os x widget

We’ve been working on making Doris available on multiple devices and platforms, and the first fruits are an OS X widget.

You can download it here.

Be warned, the widget is blazingly fast!  Dmitri and I are now using it as our main access to Doris.

Many people prefer to access their online services through means other than a browser, so we hope this does the trick for you.  For those unfortunate ones who are not using a Mac, we’ll be making a PC equivalent of the widget in the near future.

The widget has a few caveats which we will improve in upcoming releases, but we don’t think they will bother anyone:

  1. you can’t switch items between groups
  2. you don’t have a link to signup to Doris, you must be already registered

Please download it and let us know what you think in the comments!

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

Thanks Julien! We’re working hard :)

hi damien, this application allow the user to download OS X widget without login to the doris.

  4. Demian Turner says:

    Hi Saran

    You need to
    1) download and install the widget
    2) launch your dashboard
    3) login with the widget using your Doris account details

You should then be able to use it in the same way you use your web account.

Tried using widget on OS X 10.4.11. Doesn’t seem to work. Widget installs and loads into dashboard but none of the buttons work. Just a blank blue square with Doris at top left and three buttons at top right but no login box and no response when clicking on buttons. I think Doris looks great otherwise. Think I might switch from backpackit.

    Hi jamesannis

Unfortunately, I’m not able to test it in Tiger. It seems like a lot of widgets have problems with OS X 10.4.

However, you can see what the errors are with Console in DashboardClient section. Please, send this error information at feedback AT dorisapp.

It’s interesting that you went away from the blue bar look for the “add” functionality here. To me that was too visually dominant — way more “important” than the lists or to-do items themselves. I like this treatment much better, it feels about right. Don’t get me wrong, the blue bar looks great and I love how you carried that idea through the marketing site, but I think here it’s more useable. As a user if I’m wanting to get stuff done, my focus is on figuring out what I want to do and checking-off completed items — adding things just give me more to do! Maybe use the blue bar in blank slate cases, and then go more understated once users have some lists?

Just some suggestions. All said, there is some nice presentation here.

I have a strange issue with the widget on my 10.5.6 install. On the Today list on my widget I have more than 6 tasks, but I dont get any sort or scrollbar so I can see the top half of the text on one of my todo items, but no items bellow that.

  9. Demian Turner says:

Hi Tim – this is normal and how widgets work in OS X. To scroll either use your mouse wheel scroller or use 2 fingers on the trackpad.

  10. Tim de Ville says:

Thanks Demian. I can do that, but its not very intuative, and would be nice to have a scroll bar. An example of a widget I use that has a nice scrollbar is this:

    Thanks!

  11. Demian Turner says:

I totally agree with you, got me the first time too – we will implement a scrollbar in the next release – stay tuned!

  12. Tim de Ville says:

    fantasic, thanks!

  13. Demian Turner says:

@Jason Z – I had a similar impression initially and we are constantly evolving the interface trying to optimise the user experience. I’ll pass your comments on to our designers. Thanks for your feedback!

  14. Sandro Cocca says:

    Hi,

I just discovered your app today and I kinda like it. I just can’t figure out how to prioritize tasks with the widget. When I try to drag a task it drags the entire widget.

    Sandro

  15. Demian Turner says:

Hi Sandro, I’m afraid drag and drop and therefore prioritising are not yet implemented in the Dashboard app. We’ll announce it on the blog when they are, please stay tuned.

yep, we’ll be putting a scrollbar in the next release. for now just use either the roller wheel in your mouse our 2 fingers on your trackpad.

  18. Andy says:

Lovely. Needs some nice round corners though.

  19. Dmitri Lakachauskis says:

Agreed. You’ll see nice rounded corners and shadows in a next release.
